Allegany Franciscan Ministries approaches health from a “Social Influencers of Health” (SIOH) perspective (also known as Social Determinants of Health or SDOH), recognizing that individual and community health is influenced by a range of social, economic and physical conditions, such as availability of safe housing, access to healthy food, quality of education and job training, transportation options, and access to healthcare. Allegany Franciscan Ministries’ FY20 grants will fund organizations, programs and initiatives that strategically align with its mission, as well as its focus to improve the overall health status of underserved communities. Grants will support organizations that positively impact the health of individuals, families, and communities for marginalized, vulnerable, underserved or economically disadvantaged residents.
These grants will provide funding for specific projects and activities that are intended to improve the health status of those served. Projects may focus on eliminating barriers to health, advocating for health reform or systems change, or providing health navigation and care coordination. Programmatic Support may also include capacity-building efforts to improve or strengthen the organization or its programs. The grant period will be one to two years with funds ranging between $50,000 and $200,000.
In addition to addressing the strategies identified above, successful applications will:
• Effectively utilize community and neighborhood assets and resources;
• Involve those served in various ways, including decision-making;
• Produce measurable results and ongoing community impact;
• Promote the dignity of the person;
• Demonstrate an ability to address documented unmet health needs in the community.
To be considered for funding, an organization must meet the following basic requirements:
• Have received a ruling from the Internal Revenue Service confirming its exemption from federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code;
• Project serves residents of one or more of the following counties: Hillsborough, Pinellas, Martin, St. Lucie, Palm Beach, Miami-Dade;
• Be willing and able to comply with all requirements of the Allegany Franciscan Ministries Grant Agreement (See sample agreement);
• The project must align with Catholic social teaching;
• Be “in good standing” with Allegany Franciscan Ministries (for organizations that have received one or more grants from Allegany Franciscan Ministries);
• Major Grant applicants are expected to have an annual, independent audit for the most recent fiscal year and for each year of the grant term.

Only one Major Grant application may be submitted for an organization per cycle. An application can be submitted for Programmatic Support or General Operating Support (not both).
Funding is not available for:
• individuals, public agencies, capital projects/improvements (buildings, van/automobiles, etc.), fundraising events or endowments;
• afterschool, out-of-school and mentoring programs;
• direct services such as mental health counseling, sustance abuse treatment or physical therapy, or for halfway houses and similar residential programs.
Application Process and Timeline
The Major Grants application process involves two distinct competitive phases: a Letter of Intent (LOI) and a full application upon invitation.
