Allegany Franciscan Ministries’ FY20 grants will fund organizations, programs or initiatives that strategically align with its mission as well as its focus to improve the overall health status of underserved communities. Grants will support organizations that positively impact the health of individuals, families and communities for marginalized, vulnerable, underserved, or economically disadvantaged residents.

These grants will support the organization’s overall mission and goals rather than specific projects or programs, and should help strengthen the organization or further its charitable purposes. General Operating Support is unrestricted and can be used to underwrite an organization’s administrative or infrastructure costs, or help to maintain core programs and essential staff. Requests may be submitted for a total amount of up to $100,000, and not more than 25% of the organization’s annual operating budget. The grant period for General Operating Support grants will be one to two years with funds ranging between $10,000 and $100,000.

In addition to addressing the strategies identified above, successful applicants will:

• Effectively utilize community and neighborhood assets and resources;
• Involve those served in various ways, including decision-making;
• Produce measurable results and ongoing community impact;
• Promote the dignity of the person.


To be considered for funding, an organization must meet the following basic requirements:

• Have received a ruling from the Internal Revenue Service confirming its exemption from federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code;
• Serve residents of one or more of the following counties: Hillsborough, Pinellas, Martin, St. Lucie, Palm Beach, Miami-Dade;
• Be willing and able to comply with all requirements of the Allegany Franciscan Ministries Grant Agreement (See sample agreement);
• Organization must align with Catholic social teaching;
• Be “in good standing” with Allegany Franciscan Ministries (for organizations that have received one or more grants from Allegany Franciscan Ministries);
• Major Grant applicants are expected to have an annual, independent audit for the most recent fiscal year and each year of the grant term if request is $50,000 or above;
• Have held a 501(c)(3) exemption status for at least three years upon submission of Letter of Intent (LOI);
• Have evidence of long-term planning such as a detailed strategic plan or work plan.

• Only one Major Grant application may be submitted for an organization per cycle. An application can be submitted for General Operating Support or Programmatic Support (not both).
• Organizations, including universities and hospitals, with annual budgets in excess of $15 million are strongly discouraged from applying for General Operating Support grants.
• Funding is not available for:
• individuals, public agencies, capital projects/improvements (buildings, van/automobiles, etc.), fundraising events or endowments;
• afterschool, out-of-school and mentoring programs;
• direct services such as mental health counseling, substance abuse treatment or physical therapy, or for halfway houses and similar residential programs.

Application Process & Timeline

The Major Grant application process involves two distinct competitive phases: a Letter of Intent (LOI) and a full application upon invitation.
