Review

Allegany Franciscan Ministries is pleased to offer several types of grants to support our mission.  Please note that grants are not generally available for individuals, capital projects or endowments.  Funded programs must comply with a set of requirements described in the Grant Agreement.  The size of grant awards, specific eligibility requirements and guidelines vary by grant program and by region.  All applications must be submitted through an online web-based system.

Our 2013 grant programs include:

Major Grants:

Typically our grants with the largest dollar amount, major grants are strategically aligned with Allegany Franciscan Ministries’ overall mission and our regional goals.  A limited number of Major grants will be awarded in 2013 through a single, competitive, open grant cycle in each region. In addition, Allegany Franciscan Ministries may award Major grants at any time to projects that have been identified or developed through a non-competitive process based upon our work and involvement in the community. Larger grants may be awarded over a two- to three- year time frame, both to support project sustainability and to balance the flow of funds for organizations over the years.

Tau Grants:

Tau grants will be selected through three competitive grant cycles in 2013 and range up to $10,000 ($5,000 in Miami-Dade).  Generally, Tau grants are awarded to small or medium-sized local nonprofit organizations to assist with organizational or program needs that are limited in time and scope.  Tau grants may also be used to support basic and emergency needs such as food, shelter, and medication. Tau grants make up approximately 10% of our overall grant budget.

ACOR (Allegany Community Out Reach) Grants:

ACOR supports programs affiliated with the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany or Catholic Health East, and includes support to Franciscan Sisters of Allegany ministries throughout the United States as well as abroad, especially in Brazil and Jamaica.  Funds are awarded in two competitive cycles each year, and range up to $5,000.

Capacity Building Scholarships:

Scholarships are smaller awards (up to $500 per individual, $1,000 per organization in any given year) designed to pay the registration fees and expenses for conferences, seminars and other training opportunities for staff and board members of nonprofit organizations in order to increase their capacity to deliver efficient and effective services to those in need.  As with all of our grants, to be eligible, organizations must align with Allegany Franciscan Ministries’ mission.

All Region Fund Grants:

All Region Fund grants are directed to activities or projects that support Allegany Franciscan Ministries’ mission and impact more than one region.  All Region Fund grants may support national, state-wide or regional advocacy efforts, philanthropic partnerships, educational, research and planning activities, disaster response or other appropriate projects.  Some organizations may be funded continually as part of an ongoing relationship; others may receive one-time awards for specific projects or activities.  In the event of hurricanes or other disasters, the All Region Fund may be utilized to meet disaster recovery and response needs in any Florida region, the state, nationally or internationally.

The Director of Grant Programs is responsible for management of All Region Fund grants.  Direct unsolicited requests are not accepted; typically the Director of Grant Programs or CEO will speak with a nonprofit partner and invite them to submit a proposal.  Grants in 2013 are expected to range from $5,000 to $50,000; not more than ten awards are expected to be made.
