Maria Elena was 13 years old when a family acquaintance told her she could make ten times as much money waiting tables in the United States than she could in her small village in Mexico. She and several other girls were driven across the border. They continued on foot. They traveled through the desert, making their way into Texas, then across the southern US. Maria Elena and the other girls arrived at their destination in Florida, a rundown trailer where they were forced into prostitution. Maria Elena was gang-raped and locked in the trailer until she agreed to do what she was told. She lived under 24-hour watch and was forced to have sex with up to 30 men a day. When she got pregnant, she was forced to have an abortion and sent back to work the next day. Maria Elena finally escaped only to be arrested along with her traffickers. Maria Elena’s story, as shocking and deplorable as it is, is not that unusual. Each year throughout the world, millions of people, primarily women and children, are forced into labor or are commercially sexually exploited, including many in Florida.

January was designated as National Human Trafficking Month to raise awareness about this issue and recognize the human toll that this type of modern day slavery exacts on so many vulnerable human beings. One Miami-Dade organization providing much needed awareness, education, and services is Kristi House. Since 2008, Kristi House has provided prevention and treatment services to over 200 girls and will soon open Miami’s first emergency shelter for girls who have been trafficked. The home will help girls escape from their predators, get off the streets and restore their lives.

Allegany Franciscan Ministries has provided $160,859 to Kristi House since 2006. For more information about Kristi House and its program, check out their web site, www.kristihouse.org.
At the March meeting of our board of trustees, Allegany Franciscan Ministries welcomed three new board members. Lisa Johnson, APR, is Vice President, Marketing and Brand Management, for the Girl Scouts of Palm Glades Council, and is experienced in marketing, communications, strategic planning, management, and administrative leadership. Lisa has served as a Palm Beach regional commissioner for Allegany Franciscan Ministries since 2005, and has proven to be a dedicated, mission-driven, active participant in our work. Dr. Peter Gorski, MD, MPA, is the Chief Health and Child Development Officer at The Children’s Trust in Miami. Dr. Gorski has devoted his career to helping health professionals and community advocates support children and families. He has served Allegany Franciscan Ministries regional commissions in both Tampa Bay and Miami-Dade, where his deep knowledge about children’s and public health and his even deeper commitment to our community has been priceless. Sr. Joan Dawson, OSF, is currently the Episcopal Delegate for Religious for the Diocese of Palm Beach, providing services and programs for the spiritual and personal growth of the Religious. Sister Joan was the Superintendent for the Offices of Catholic Schools, Diocese of Palm Beach from 1991 until this past year when she “retired”. She also is a member of our Palm Beach regional commission. We are delighted to welcome these three amazing individuals to the board!

Outgoing Trustees Thanked for Their Service

In December, we said farewell to three trustees who had served our mission with commitment and integrity for many years. John F. Flanigan was our chairman for the last two years; he and Tom Siccone continue to serve on our Palm Beach regional commission. Sr. Avril Chin Fatt, OSF, held an ex officio position on our board during her eight years as congregational minister for the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany. We will be forever grateful for the dedication of these three humble servants to our ministry.

Early in 2012, the Allegany Franciscan Ministries board of trustees began a dialogue about various strategic opportunities. Through the course of the year, in concert with the staff team and regional commissioners, the trustees decided to consider developing a “Common Good Initiative” in which Allegany Franciscan Ministries would identify one issue, form strategies around a theory of change, and invest a significant amount of resources over a period of time to impact the issue.

We’re excited about the work ahead, and the opportunity to have a more significant, systemic impact on the lives, health and dignity of those who are underserved in our communities. A task force, led by trustee Carl R. Lavender, Jr., MS, and in consultation with Shelley Robertson, Ed.D., will meet through this year. The task force will engage community partners and those we serve in the process of discerning what “issue” will be addressed, and how. Our traditional grant-making work in each of our regions will continue while resources are also directed to this new strategic direction.

We have engaged in this process of discernment with faith and hope, along with a touch of trepidation. There are still many unanswered questions, which will be answered as we move forward. We look forward to engaging our community partners in helping us to answer these questions.

For more information, or to get involved in the dialogue, please contact Eileen Boyle at eboyle@afmfl.org.

Peace and All Good!

I am excited and hopeful about the opportunities this year brings for Allegany Franciscan Ministries and for those we seek to serve. We have a strong and deeply committed staff team, actively engaged volunteers on our regional commissions and board of trustees, and a stable financial outlook. Our “parent company”, Catholic Health East, is moving toward a consolidation with Trinity Health to create a new, unified ministry with a shared mission to serve and to heal. This new, larger ministry will be able to provide even more exceptional health care and will have a stronger voice to work towards transforming health care. Allegany Franciscan Ministries’ board and commissioners are also in dialogue about a new focused initiative, building on the good work we already do, to address critical human needs in the communities we serve.

In 2012 Allegany Franciscan Ministries awarded more than 170 grants totaling some $5.4 million to local non-profit organizations in the six Florida counties that we serve. Since awarding our first grants in 1999, we have distributed more than $65 million, mainly focused on increasing access to health care services and improving the health status of Florida’s underserved communities. We especially encourage non-profits who have new, innovative ideas that could lead to systemic change in access to health care for the disadvantaged to become familiar with our grant making process.

In other good news, a week after our March board meeting, we learned that our newly elected Pope had chosen the name Francis! We are inspired by Pope Francis’ humility, his dedication to serving those who are poor and marginalized, and his commitment to peace.

The Allegany Franciscan Ministries board of trustees is very enthusiastic about our accomplishments to date as well as about our future. On behalf of the board, I extend our sincere thanks to all who support our mission through partnerships to help our brothers and sisters in need.

Blessings,
